MPs' bills
Housing, travel, and offices the taxpayer pays for. Parliament publishes the totals each quarter. It does not publish the receipts.
The Herald put MPs' combined property interests at $379 million. National averaged $4.6 million, Labour $2 million. After this government restored rental tax deductions and cut the bright-line to two years, coalition MPs added at least 25 extra rentals or second homes. No opposition MP added a new rental this term.
- Ordinary MPs outside Wellington: up to $36,400 a year for a Wellington flat, including one they own. Ministers: up to $52,000.
- An MP or a party can own the electorate office and charge the taxpayer rent.
- The Taxpayers' Union adds up Parliament's tables. The dollars are real. The Union is an Atlas partner on ACT's side, not a referee.
